Berndnaut Smilde - Cloud Maker

I have heard the expression "you make your own sunshine" before, but never actually seen someone create their own weather phenomenon - of any kind.  That is until I came across Berndnaut Smilde, who uses water spray bottles, smoke machines, and humidity control to create actual clouds in empty spaces.  The clouds float around long enough to be photographed, then disappear, and the resulting photographs are striking.  Smilde's photograph Nimbus D'Aspremont (below) will be involved in the show Red Sky at Night at the Mercer Union in Toronto from mid-June to the end of July - I hope to catch it before I leave for Alberta!

Found on Booooooom.

  2. Thanks Dharma, I agree - so soft and pretty but sort of jarring at the same time.  Some people are SO creative, I love finding these gems.

Dont know why, but these remind me of Alice in Wonderland. Very surreal.

  5. When I first saw them I assumed they were photoshopped, I think they are even cooler knowing that a cloud actually floated through the room.

  6. They are surreal, aren't they!  But in a soft and fluffy way... :)

That is AMAZING. Particularly smitten with that first photo. Must be a trick of the lighting, but doesn't that look like sun shining down through it? Absolutely gorgeous.

  8. Hiya April - I think that was intentional!  I waited until it passed in front of a big spotlight for the photo.  I think there is a video of it somewhere online...
