Things I never thought I would say
You know, it's hard out there for a blogger. Any time I see something funny and cool I want to pass on, I scroll down my Facebook feed and see that it has already been sent around 20 times. But whatever, I am posting these posters anyway, cause they are damn funny.
I know everyone has had at least one moment with a child where you say (or, more likely, yell) something outrageous at your kid. It's only then, once the words have left your mouth and you have heard yourself say them, you stop, slightly surprised, and think "Wow. That's the weirdest thing I have ever said." Then you post it on Facebook and file it away to trade with other parents at a later date.
Well, Nathan Ripperger is WAY more industrious than that. He takes the crazy and insane things that come out of his mouth and turns them into really cool posters. And then sells them in his Etsy store: https://www.etsy.com/shop/nripperger. Wish I'd thought of that.
I have definitely said the toilet seat one. Actually, let me think of some of the things I said this week:
- No penises on the table. (How many times do I have to say it??)
- Why is there toothpaste in both your eyebrows?
- Just because your brother is sitting on your head does NOT mean you get to stay home from school.
- Yes, you can bring Giraffy the Turtle to the dentist.
- Everybody has to wear their OWN underwear.
- No scissors in the bath!
- Yes you can take a bath with the farm animals.
- Stop wiping your nose on my arm.
Do you have any memorable "I never thought I would say that" quotes?
The dark side of home ownership
After all the searching, all the open houses, all the paperwork and signatures, you hear those magic words: "It's Yours." You can hardly believe it, but there it is - in all it's lovely glory - your very own new house. Gosh it's exciting. You drive by it approximately 287 times in a slow, creepy way before you get possession, imagining paint colours and fixtures and landscaping. You pour over the teeny weeny floor plan that was in the marketing kit, envisioning renos and furniture placement. When you get the keys, you hold your breath as you push open the door for the first time, and maybe celebrate with a little bubbly sitting on the bare floor, your euphoric giggles echoing through the empty rooms. It is a mortgage commercial come to life.
It's a little smaller than you remembered from the open house and that one other time you walked through it... and the kitchen is much worse than you remembered (are those mouse droppings??)...but think of the equity! The decorating potential! Replace the roof? No big deal, you knew that going in - but what colour should it be?
Sound familiar? Who's with me?
Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE my house, I really and truly do. The renos, the paint, the landscaping - it was hard work for sure, but the satisfaction of knowing it was my own cozy haven, my very own home made it more than worthwhile. Even the essential-but-not-pretty things like plumbing, electrical, and chimney cleaning are all worth it.
It's the surprises that kill me. Surprises are usually expensive, usually no fun, and decidedly UN-SEXY. Here are a few of the visits to the dark side of home ownership that I have taken in the last three years of being here:
So it's not all sunshine and roses in my wicked and weird world (the raccoon thing definitely qualifies as weird though). Amidst the the craig's list cabinet victories, the Value Village scores, and the crafty afternoon are loads upon loads of laundry, sink scouring, and potty training. But who would want to read about all that? ;p I would say my home and I are out of the honeymoon stage, but there are definitely more days that not that I look around fondly. I do love this house, flaws and all.
But seriously, enough sappy, misery loves company. I know you must have your own house surprises - please share!!

Champagne + Friends
I saw this on my friend Karen's tumblr blog and needed to re-post it. I then spent 45 minutes searching through at least nine other blogs for the source, which is HERE. It was worth it though, don't you think? It is the truth - in a Venn Diagram. Awesome.
Edit: There is a definite need for some champagne around here - I just noticed that I now have 100 Blogger followers. WOOOHOO! A bubbly toast to all of you!!

Shit Girls Say
I know this is everywhere, but it cracks me up (esp. "Can you just ... turn it down a little?...)
Also I have not been able to look at Juliette Lewis and not shudder since Cape Fear....
Fear Factory
Chris and I went to Niagara yesterday for a last minute night away (we took advantage of a wonderful offer from my Mumma to babysit during her visit - thanks mom!). I will post some photos of the falls in a bit, but I can't help but resist putting up this shot of Chris in the Fear Factory (yes, by himself, I ain't no fool...). For Chris, that is actually a crazy reaction shot, but I can't help but be disappointed when I look at the Fear Factory's flickr page. He could at least have faced the camera, for Pete's sake. :)
I still can't quite figure out what wax museums and haunted houses (there were at least 3 of each there) have to do with those incredible waterfalls and an amazing natural phenomenon? Niagara Falls is a very strange place... Anyone else been to "the world's most frightening experience"? (And if so, can you please share your photos??? Pleeeease??)
Unusual Wedding Photography
With wedding season drawing to a close, I am sure you have seen your fill of gorgeous weddings and incredible, romantic photos, but I have one more for you. I am not sure how I stumbled on these wedding photographs of Korean couple Julian Sunmi Park and Benjamin Jinsuk Lee, but they might possibly be the most unique wedding photos I have ever, or will ever see.
I love the soft, warm, romantic light of their special picnic in a field of wildflowers, with the undead closing in on them. Yes, that's right, they had a zombie-themed wedding. Zombie-themed wedding. Never thought I would type those words together...
...and they lived happily ever after in their geeky awesomeness.

Anniversary
Yesterday was my anniversary - it blows me away to think that I have been married to my wonderful hubster for 8 years, and have been dating him for almost 14! We were married at my cottage at New River Beach in New Brunswick, and I love that I can go back and visit this special place every year. I had SO much fun at my wedding. Part of me is so grateful that I planned it before the advent of blogs, as the pressure to have a "blog-worthy" affair would no doubt weigh on me. The other part of me feels like my wedding was blog-worthy anyway! Too bad no one had digital cameras back then... Happy Anniversary Mr. Petrik!

Dear Blank Please Blank
Dear Blank Please Blank is a funny little site perfect for procrastinating. Their posts are these awesome quips, not sure who wrote them all, but I know you can submit your own. Well, they have paired up with the fabulous Sapling Press letterpress shop and you can now have a lovely pressed print that makes you chuckle every time you pass it. The Unicorns is my fav, but there are so many good ones.
Found on Design, Work, Life - one of my current favourite blogs.
Do you recognize this lady?
Thankfully I have never displayed such behaviour. My KIDS on the other hand... yeesh. This short film was made by the (I'm assuming amazing and hilarious) Swedish director Johannes Nyholm about a woman who trashes a bar in Las Palmas, starring his baby as the woman. I laughed 'til I cried - no lie. Watch it. (And then watch it again - it just gets funnier.) Thanks Joanna.
I Heart Karen
My friend Karen made this fabulous video compiling all the photos she has take at her desk at work. I have to say a highlight of my day is to get one of these photos in my email - so a whole video was too much fun! She picked the best music, and I think you will agree has the most beautiful necklaces, hair cut, and smile! She also has a fun blog. Conclusion: I love Karen.
Movember done right, eh? (Not that anyone can do it wrong...)
Beauty, eh? I haven't really blogged about the Canadian Design Bloggers Meetup* but since that marvellous event I have been 1) inspired to blog like never before and 2) introduced to some kickin' new blogs. One of these is definitely OK, Now what?, and I was won over by the Movember team. Maggie (author of OK, Now What?)'s husband Rob and two of his friends did the Movember challenge for prostate cancer in magnificent Canadian style. Team MOser's, eh? (a la "Take off, ya Hoser!") had an accompanying blog, which is good for fashion, fitness, and etiquette tips. I encourage you to check it out. And apparently, there is still time to help contribute to their campaign, which you can do here. Nice work, ya hosers....
*About the event - it was seriously awesome and inspiring and I got to meet a whole bunch of amazing Canadian/Torontonian bloggers. I will be adding a special category to my blogroll. However, I didn't take any photos, and I am not in any of the 'official' photos from the event (mercifully?), so I figured no post!

Jr. Conductor
This video made the rounds at my work today (the Toronto Symphony Orchestra) and I enjoyed it so much I just had to share!
It is impressive just how well he knows the music - he has clearly heard this quite a few times before! - and I would hazard a guess that at least one of his parents is a conductor, he has so many of the perfect mannerisms. But gosh - that JOY is so fantastic! I have heard this piece sooooo many times and watching him 'live' it was like hearing it for the first time!
It also made me wonder... how many conductors have to deal with a REALLY itchy nose during their performance? Respect! :)

Smell Like a Monster
I trust everyone has seen the Old Spice Commercial? (And as an aside - did you know he used to be a science teacher??) In case you haven't - you should. Then look at your man. Then back at this guy.
Then look at Grover... then back at me.

War on trends
I am gonna guess that you guys are less addicted to design-blog-land than I (my addiction is unhealthy so I am hoping you lead a more balanced life) but maybe you are in the same rehab-worthy boat. Either way you may have seen several "trends-we-hate" posts out there. I always read them and partly agree, partly disagree. I think in the blog age great rooms spark trends faster than you can say DIY, and then the resulting photos are circulated so quickly, and so often, that we get tired of them much faster than we would normally. And, like fashion, some trends just plain don't work with your space(/ass), while other trends are perfect for you, and will be when they are no longer trendy. So a trend and its application is often a matter of personal choice and style.
That all being said, I just came across this Trend-Hate post on My Favourite and My Best, and had to laugh my head off. The trends are all there - chalkboard paint, DIY, chevrons, greek keys, hipster moustaches at weddings - but her take on them is so vehement it had to make me laugh. I don't know if I love her or am afraid of her. I don't think I have seen the f-word so many times on one blog. Awesome.
She has another subsequent post which is also worth reading, as are many of the comments. So, what is your take on design trend hate? And/or liberal swearing in blog posts? :)

Oh Marcel...
I had a really long, stressful, and exhausting day at work today and downed some wine as soon as the kids were in bed. So that may be why I found this HILARIOUS. Or maybe it is just plain awesome. But Chris watched 5 minutes of it, gave me that look, shook his head, and said "You're weird." So maybe it isn't.

Why having a toddler is like being at a frat party
I just saw this hilarious post on Suburban Snapshots and just had to re-post it. It is pretty funny, especially the added comments below. Hey - university parties were fun, right? Oh but Mum, I only heard about them from other people...
Ten reasons raising a toddler is like being at a frat party:
10. There are half-full, brightly-colored plastic cups on the floor in every room. Three are in the bathtub.
9. There's always that one girl, bawling her eyes out in a corner.
8. It's best not to assume that the person closest to you has any control over their digestive function.
7. You sneak off to the bathroom knowing that as soon as you sit down, someone's going to start banging on the door.
6. Probably 80% of the stains on the furniture contain DNA.
5. You've got someone in your face at 3 a.m. looking for a drink.
4. There's definitely going to be a fight.
3. You're not sure whether anything you're doing is right, you just hope it won't get you arrested.
2. There are crumpled-up underpants everywhere.
1. You wake up wondering exactly how and when the person in bed with you got there.
My favourite additions from the comments:
- At least one person is lying on the floor, either face up or face down, singing at the top of their lungs.
- You ask the two nearly naked girls what they're doing and they say they're having a 'naked underwear party.'
- There is a pretty girl alternately screaming and crying at you (or at nothing) from the staircase.
- You look inside the "clean" cups for offending material before filling with a drinkable liquid.
- You find yourself saying things you never thought you'd say- like: "Please stop licking the dog"
- Someone has pee on their pants and marker all over their face.
Oh yeah. Good times. Gooooood times. Anyway, Brenna's blog is hilarious, and so on the money. Check it out if you are a mom.
