Stitched Wool Laptop Case

DIY_macbook_laptop_case_stitched_wool
The weird thing One of the (many) weird things about me is that when I am stressed out I am at my most creative.  I'll have fourteen deadlines and a calendar covered in black ink and suddenly feel the overwhelming urge to knit a sweater and re-paint a whole dining room set.  Hey, it's better than smoking crack, right?  So with a complete mess in my beautiful basement; a pile of business cards on my table from plumbers, flood clean-up guys, insurance adjusters, and contractors; and two new patched-up holes in my front yard, I knew it was time to get out the scissors and spray paint.

One project that had been on my list for a while was a sleeve for my laptop.  In the summer, when I was home, I found an old leather book bag my parents had given me when I was maybe 8 or 9.  It even has my monogram on it!  I don't think I used it for very long, since it wasn't very big and wasn't all that cool at the time... But now it seems all kinds of cool, and the perfect size for my laptop to boot.

The only problem was that it had no lining for my most precious baby, er, I mean computer.  When I saw this tutorial on Design*Sponge, I realized I had found my solution.   I had bought a sample of some lovely soft herringbone wool ages ago at a fundraiser for the Textile Museum, and had never known what to do with it.  I dug it up and paired it with a bright green embroidery thread.

I followed the instructions somewhat, and made them up somewhat as I went along.  All my sewing stuff was under plastic in the basement so I had to improvise. :)  William helped me sew the top of the case down - I would put the needle into the wool and he would grab it and walk away with it until it was taught.  It took a LONG TIME but that's ok.  I finished the sides up with the oh-so-beautiful blanket stitch, and slid it in my briefcase.

Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!  What do you think?  Are you a stress-crafter?  Or am I one of a kind? :p

Liebster Blog Award

I love blog awards - they are usually passed around from blogger to blogger and I think it is such a great way to support and encourage each other.  And I was supremely flattered to be given a Liebster Blog Award from the lovely and hilarious Dharma of The Wannabe Mermaid.  I met Dharma at the very first Canadian Design Bloggers meet-up and loved her immediately - she was so open and kind-hearted - and I look forward to seeing her at every meet-up.

The Liebster award is given to blogs that deserve more followers and aim to break the 100 mark. ( I try not to look at that little number in the corner, but I can't help but notice that I am getting close!)

It is my turn to pass along the award, so pop on over to these great blogs and hit that follow button. (And if you haven't hit it yet on my blog, now would be a great time...)

- Dharma of The Wannabe Mermaid is a riot and her blog is always a fun read.

- Maggie of Okay, Now What? has fabulous taste and is tackling some huge project in her house, (now while preggo) making me look like a lazy bum.

- Amy of aDESIGNdock really doesn't need my help, she is a contributor for StyleAtHome.com and has been featured on Design*Sponge, but I love her blog and her kick-ass Prairie style.

- Jen of Kitchen Counter Chronicles is one of those moms that always has genius craft ideas, great recipes, and is always taking her kids someplace cool in Toronto, but I like her anyway.  I met her digging in the garden for Bloggers Give Back (we decimated a Forsythia together) and she is a true sweetheart.

So go show these ladies some love!

Great Canadian Blogs

At January's Canadian Design Bloggers meet-up I discovered SO MANY amazing, smart, beautiful, and inspirational Canadian blogs.  My google reader instantly doubled in size, and I pledged to make a separate Canadian blog roll on the side.  With the next meet-up of the Canadian Design Bloggers happening this Saturday (so excited) I figured it was HIGH TIME to get my act together and make good on my pledge!  So there it is, over on the side, and honestly, it grows pretty much every day. I am sure after Saturday's festivities it will expand even more!  I thought I would pick just a few to highlight so you can add them to your readers too.  Here are some of the ones I jump to when I see they have a new post up:

The Lindsay behind Aubrey & Lindsay's Little House Blog is the same mutli-talented lady who is running the Bloggers Give Back project that I keep blogging about.  She is so sweet and approachable, and that kind personality shines through in her writing.  The blog is her account of all the work she and her husband have done and are doing to their house, both major and minor.  It also includes other fun tid-bits from her life, including accounts of their adorable son, parties, cake making, her business (Penny People Designs) and life in the Upper Beaches of Toronto.  Their Ikea Rast hack has been seen just about everywhere on the web, and even I have been tempted to try it.

Jen writes this great DIY home blog called Rambling Renovators, and the things she and her Handyman husband have done to their Toronto house are outstanding.  It is therefore no surprise that this blog has been profiled in House & Home, Style at Home, the Globe and Mail, Apartment Therapy, Design*Sponge, and on and on and on!  She even went on the Nate Berkus Show to show how they did the paneling in the bedroom.  They also have an adorable little girl, who has inspired beautiful birthdays and crafts that Jen is kind enough to share - in really thoughtful parenting posts.  Again, a girl with similar taste to mine, but with the guts to take on big projects and do them brilliantly (and with a garage workshop I completely envy).

Sarah has a great blog called Sarah Wandering, and again, (in my opinion) beautiful taste.  An architectural designer by trade, she uncovers some stunning homes and buildings online. She also shares her own unique style in chronically the decor in her home in Toronto, and I especially love when she uses objects from her family's treasure trove in the Southwest-Ontario farm town where she grew up.  Her DIYs are kind of legendary, and probably occupy 50% of my "Someday I Will Do That" list.  Also she has great hair, and an adorable lab.

Bess Callard is a talented graphic designer based in Montreal with a sweet shop of kids (or adult!) prints.  She is also the Illustrator for Pure Green magazine, a fantastic online magazine with a focus on eco-inspired living.  Her English Muffin blog is full of lovely photos and finds, but my favourite is her Canadiana series, which highlights the work of Canadian artisans.  She also chooses some great music, and hers is one of those blogs that I keep clicking through to see where she finds things!  Oh and someday I will do this project.  Someday.

Shannon is another Toronto-based blogger who has a fun feminine style.  Her What's Up Whimsy blog is full of eye candy, funky finds, and original DIYs.  She just finished her son's room and it is unlike any you have seen on other blogs, which is not easy to do.  She also dabbles in event design, and her son's last birthday was also totally original.  She has a series on her blog called A House is not a Home without Craig's List, which as you can imagine, I am completely addicted to.

I have only recently discovered Barbara's Vancouver-based Hodge Podge blog but I am already hooked.  She is the DIY Queen of Canada (I enjoy handing out royal titles).  Her projects are always stylish and affordable, and just enough of a stretch beyond my skills that I think I could learn to do them (well some of them).  Her column So Canadian, eh? is what brought me to her blog.  Barbara interviews people connected to the Canadian style and design community in an effort to bring them some exposure and somehow identify what constitutes "Canadian style."  Her recent interview with Christiane Lemieux of Dwell Studio is one of my faves.

Renee's blog Eat. Live. Shop. is an obvious obsession.  I mean, it is called "Eat. Live. Shop." for pete's sake.  She has the funkiest style, and has introduced me to many new clothing and jewellery designers through her posts.  She puts together some fashion mood boards that combine things that I would never have thought of together, and always inspire me to push beyond my boring basics (although I never really do...).  She has great DIY's of the "I could totally do that this weekend" variety, and her column Cool Shit is chock full of, well, cool shit.

I will try not to sound like a gushing, mildly overly obsessive fan when I describe this blog.  It is one of the first ones I check every day.  Mostly because I have decided I want to be Emma when I grow up.  Her house is beautiful, so perfectly but uniquely styled, and recently got a Sneak Peak tour on Design*Sponge (another one of my all-time fave blogs).  Her taste is 100% my style, only waaaaay better.  Plus she works as an exhibition designer at the AGO, which at one point in my life was my dream job (I even have a degree in Museum Studies).   Her Hello Neighbour posts are the highlight of my voyeuristic blog reading: all homes in the Parkdale area of Toronto, all with exceptional style, all beautifully and professionally photographed.  Heaven for someone who tries to peek into people's homes when I am out on a walk in the evening to see how they have decorated (don't tell me you don't do this!).

OK, there are about a dozen more I was going to add, but my wine and some sleep are calling my name.

But rest assured - click on any link in that blog roll and you will find gold.  Solid, Canadian gold.

Thanks for participating, and thank you to Frankie Ferragine for helping out with the George Herman House Project!

Giveaway - Frankie Ferragine's new book!

Recognize this guy?  If you don't live in Toronto, the answer might well be no.  But if you DO live in Toronto, you probably recognize Frank Ferragine aka Frankie Flowers as the weather guy from Breakfast Television (he has been Toronto's Favourite Weather Personality 6 years running).  He also has a gardening segment on Breakfast Television, is a contributing garden writer for Canadian Living and Canadian Gardening, is the gardening expert on CityLine, writes a weekly column in the Toronto Sun promoting local food, farming, and cuisine, and has just launched his new book, pictured above: Get Growing.  And now, most importantly, he and his garden design teammate Beth Edney of Teamscape have signed on to our George Herman House Project.  I can't quite believe how big this project has gotten, with Frankie and sponsors like Ikea Canada, Tonic Living, Bona Vista Pools, and Mastermind Toys on board.  It is amazing - I am so happy to see such a great cause get so much support.

So here is the cool part for you, and the terrifying part for me: the giveaway.  See, I have never done one of these...(what if no one comments?)...  However, for the good of the cause, and because it is the exciting start of gardening season, I am thrilled to squash my inner-wimp and give one of my lucky readers a copy of Frankie's new book!  To enter, simply leave a comment below describing your gardening skills.  Could you have written this thing, or are you confused by all the greenery pictured above?  Do you speak fertilizer (25-10-10...huh?), or have you been known to melt plastic flowers?  It's ok... no judgement here... :)  If you tweet about the giveaway (and use #bloggersgiveback) leave another comment for an extra entry.  Good luck!  To inspire you to "get growing", I leave you with some photos I took this weekend -such glorious weather!

Bloggers Give Back Auction Ends Soon!

I have been having a terrible week and sadly have not had much of a chance to blog.  However, I would be remiss if I didn't let you all know about the charity auction that is ending THIS SATURDAY in support of the George Herman House project we have been working on.  There is so much good stuff there, including an amazing night at the symphony (biased), your choice of Sharon Montrose's animals in print (I want this so don't bid too high...), sexy Delta faucets, and so much more.  This link will take you right to eBay - get out your wallet!  AUCTION!

Also, Lindsay announced last week that none other than Frankie Flowers (Frank Ferragine) will be designing the garden!  How's that for star power??  I will be doing a give-away of his new book, and it is my first give-away ever, so please be aware that most of my self-esteem will be tied up in how many comments I get.  :)

Blogger Smackdown

OK, that might be false advertising, there will not actually be a smackdown.  However, Miss Lindsay has done a fabulous montage of all of the mood boards contributed to the George Herman House project and now there is a wee contest on to vote for your favourite.  The winner gets to be called the winner, and isn't that the best prize of all?  I just loved seeing how 13 different people imagine the perfect garden, they were each so different and amazing.  I would happily spend my days in each and every one!  Head on over and check them out and leave comment with your pick.  And anything you feel you could donate is of course most appreciated - we have decided to accept anything up to April 1 and then assess what we have the means to accomplish, so if you are thinking of helping out, you now have a specific date to aim for!

George Herman House update

Aerial view
Looking back at the house
Lindsay has been working hard on the George Herman House garden project.  She has taken some more photos and measurements in order for us to get a better idea of the space, and suggested we might want to take a crack at some mood boards to get the creative juices flowing.  She also found Tonic Living to generously offer outdoor fabrics. Meanwhile Jen has secured a fantastic donation of all the outdoor furniture from Ikea Canada, and Tim wrangled a wealth of donated plants.  We also have Bona Vista Pools/ Landscapes donating some accessories, and a cash donation of $500!  Not a bad start, right?

With all that in mind, I hopped on Olioboard to try my hand at this mood board thing.  Ooooh golly it is addictive!  Can I have a career in this??
I am no garden designer by ANY stretch of the imagination, but just put together some of the Ikea furniture I liked, with fabrics and pillows from Tonic Living. You can't go wrong with a big, comfy sectional to stretch out on, with a big ottoman for snacks.  My idea of an easy, low-maintenance garden is to use potted plants and I love the look of Boston Ferns outside. Believe it or not they adore our southern-Ontario summers. And red geraniums are favourites of mine - simple but with a hint of Europe (they make me think of Italian window sills and terraces), and such cheerful red colour. (I also like the red mixed with the hot pink colour!) And for fabic colours, you can't go wrong with a bright grassy green, sunny yellow, and red accents. Cheerful, easy-going, and low maintenance!  Add some lemonade and a good book, and Bob's your uncle.

What do you think?  Does this ever make me excited to get outside this summer...

To help with this projects, please feel free to visit the bloggersgiveback.com site, where there is a PayPal button to make it easy.  Any other donations - of time, supplies, advice, etc. - are happily and gratefully accepted as well.  Thanks for reading!

George Herman House

As you all may have figured out by now, I love blogs.  I find them endlessly inspiring and interesting, from my mommy blogs, to my design blogs, to my marketing geek-out blogs.  To all my non-blog-following friends and family, who wonder what on earth could keep me on the computer for so many hours, I equate them to online magazines - lots of pretty pictures and articles to peruse.  But the great thing about blogs is that they are written (for the most part) by one person, and by following their posts, links, projects, and even tweets, you really feel like you get to know the author.

I have discovered in the last 6 months or so that there is an incredible community of like-minded blog-lovers in Toronto, who share amazing ideas and have loads of personality.  One of these writers, Lindsay of Little House Blog, mentioned that she was going to volunteer with the George Herman House to spruce up a sad and forlorn garden for their residents, and wanted to know if anyone else would be interested in helping out.  I looked up the George Herman House and found an amazing transitional house helping women with mental and emotional troubles learn to respect and care for themselves, and signed up to help in any way I could. When I think of the hours of enjoyment I get out of my garden, I can't help but imagine how a lovely and tranquil space would help these women out.

This, however, is not going to cut it:
So how are we going to help?  Well, I certainly intend to get my hand dirty, and I am sure more volunteers for that would be appreciated.  But there are also the supplies, the plants, the materials, the skilled labour, and of course the fundraising.  We are working on all of the above, and if there is any way that you feel like you could contribute, we would love to hear it!  You can leave a comment or any advice here, or head over to Bloggers Give Back to find out more details or make a tax-receiptable contribution.  To follow our plans on twitter, search the hashtag #bloggersgiveback.  I can't wait to share the after photos!
